Orthotist/Prosthetist

The Allied Health workforce is broad and diverse and includes health practitioners who work autonomously and in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teams.

In the UK, the Allied Health sector is set to grow into the future due to advances in technology and increasing demand for healthcare services, including holistic healthcare approaches. The sector encompasses many professional pathways and opportunities for career development and specialisation. See our list of job roles for more information on various Allied Health professions

Orthotists/Prosthetists prescribe, design, construct, fit and modify orthoses and prostheses. They work in clinical settings, such as allied health and rehabilitation departments in hospitals and in prosthetic/orthotic workshops. They also work in private orthotic/prosthetic facilities, NGOs, and in academia and research departments. They work with medical specialists and patients to produce high quality devices that improve a patient's function, mobility and quality of life. They can adjust and adapt devices to meet the patient’s needs. They may manage a team of technicians who help with the design and construction process. Orthotist/Prosthetists have completed a Bachelor of Prosthetics and Orthotics (Honours), or equivalent Master of Clinical Prosthetics and Orthotics following a Bachelor of Applied Science degree. They register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
